Oil Gun vs Oil Can: How to Choose the Right Lubrication Tool for Your Workshop

Last quarter a buyer in Brazil asked us to quote 5,000 "oil guns" by the end of the month. The RFQ attached photos of an American-style pressurized oil pot, not the pistol-grip squeezable oiler. We shipped pressurized pots. The vocabulary on a lubrication tool is not as settled as the vocabulary on a drill — half the RFQs that come in use "oil gun" for at least three different products — and the choice of which one a workshop stocks is mostly driven by what the mechanics already have on the bench. This page is what we tell a new buyer who asks us to choose for them.

The four SKUs we currently ship in this category: SL-203 metal oil gun (290 g), SL-210 plastic oil can (350 ml flexible spout), YZDT2001 American-style pressurized oil pot (300 cc), and YZDT2021 heavy-duty pressurized oil pot (350 cc). The names are from our catalog, not the buyer's catalog — which is part of why RFQs get confused.

What each one actually does on the bench

An oil gun is a pistol-shaped hand-pumped oiler. You grip, you squeeze, one measured drop of oil comes out the spout. It is small (280–380 g in our range), it works one-handed, and it sits next to a mechanic's toolbox, not on a parts shelf. The plastic oil can is a 200–400 ml translucent bottle with a flexible brass or plastic spout that you pull out and bend toward a fitting. It does not pressurize; you squeeze the bottle. A pressurized oil pot has a pump on top, a rigid curved spout, and an internal piston; you pump, you squeeze the trigger, and 0.2–0.5 cc comes out per stroke. The "American-style" naming covers the look — formed steel body, knurled pump knob, ball-bearing pump linkage — but the engineering is the same as the rest of the pressurized range.

What they share: all of them are drip oilers, not spray guns. None of them atomize. If the application needs an aerosol or a thin mist (light chain lube, penetrating spray, brake cleaner), none of these will do it — that is an aerosol-can or a pressurized sprayer category and is outside the page.

If the air temperature in your market drops below -10°C in winter, do not stock the SL-210 as the workhorse — the HDPE cracks on a 1.5 m drop when cold. We have a Nordic buyer who switched to the YZDT2001 pressurized pot for that reason and never went back.

Channel by channel, where each one works

The honest shortlist we use when a buyer asks "what should I add to my range":

  • Auto repair shop — general mechanic. YZDT2001 pressurized pot is the workhorse. Mechanics pump it with one hand and hit a fitting with the other. A plastic SL-210 sits on the parts shelf as a cheap top-up. Metal SL-203 is the third tool, for the ones who do not like the pump feel.
  • Gas station / quick-lube. YZDT2021 heavy-duty only. The double O-ring and the zinc body survive the constant refilling and the occasional knock-off-the-bench. The plastic SL-210 does not survive a gas station; it gets sat on, sat with, dropped, and the spout gets yarded out.
  • Industrial plant / factory maintenance. SL-203 metal oil gun first, YZDT2021 second. The pistol grip is faster on repetitive single-fittings — operator hits one fitting per minute and pumps with the same hand. Pressurized pot for shared-use bench stations.
  • Heavy machinery (mining, construction, agriculture). YZDT2021 only, but watch the spec sheet — for the Americas and EU we ship the zinc body, for Southeast Asia and the Gulf we sometimes specify a copper-alloy spout to resist sulfur corrosion.
  • Hardware retail / DIY shelf. SL-203 + SL-210 only. The pressurized pots look industrial and confuse the home buyer — they sit.
  • Online marketplace (Amazon, Mercado Libre, eBay, Takealot). SL-203 and YZDT2001 are the two best-selling SKUs. SL-210 is the cheapest "add to cart"; the heavy-duty pot is the lowest turnover.

A Latin American distributor who has carried our line since 2022 told us last year that his mix moved from 60% SL-203 / 30% SL-210 / 10% pressurized to 35% / 15% / 50% as his auto-shop accounts grew. That mix is what we usually see when a market crosses from mostly-DIY into mostly-shop.

What we get wrong, and what we have learned

Three things that have hurt us in this category over the past 24 months, in case it saves you the same mistake:

1. The flexible spout on the SL-210 ages out faster than the bottle. The HDPE bottle is fine for 3+ years. The PP flexible spout, if you ship it to a hot climate without UV protection, gets hard and cracks at the bend after about 18 months. A Brazilian buyer in 2023 had 1,200 units with cracked spouts within the first summer. We added 2% carbon-black masterbatch to the spout compound, and the problem went away. If you are running a high-UV market (Australia, Brazil, the Gulf, equatorial Africa), specify the UV-stabilized spout on the spec sheet — it is the same price, but you have to ask.

2. The pump O-ring on the pressurized pot is the part that fails first. NBR pump O-rings go flat in cold conditions. We had a Nordic buyer whose first shipment of 800 YZDT2001 pots had about a 7% pump-failure rate after one winter. We switched the O-ring to HNBR and the failure rate dropped to below 1%. If you are running a cold-market buyer (Nordics, Canada, Russia, northern China, Patagonia), specify HNBR on the spec. The HNBR O-ring costs us about USD 0.07 per pot more than NBR, and we will not push it on you unless you are running a cold market — most buyers do not need to pay for it.

3. "Heavy-duty" is not just a thicker can. The YZDT2021 looks like a YZDT2001 with thicker walls, but the changes that make it heavy-duty are the double O-ring pump, the zinc plating on the spout and lid, the sight glass on the side, and the 200 mm rigid spout instead of 150 mm. If a buyer asks you for a "thicker pressurized pot", they may actually mean any of those changes, and the price gap is real. Do not quote it as if it were the same thing.

OEM, private label and what it actually costs

If you are scaling any of these as a private-label program, here is what we charge for the parts that are not obvious from a price list:

  • Housing color match (not a standard color): USD 800–1,200 per mold for the SL-203 housing or YZDT2021 body. Standard catalog colors (red, blue, black, yellow) are free. Pantone matches add the mold plus a 5% color-match fee per batch.
  • Custom logo on the housing or the spout: silk-screen for orders above 500 pcs per color, free. Below 500, pad print runs about USD 0.08 per piece.
  • Custom retail box artwork (AI / EPS / PDF supplied by you): free. The print plate is USD 50–80 per color, refunded across the first order. Color-label shrink wrap costs USD 0.04 per pot above 5,000 pcs.
  • UV-stabilized flexible spout on SL-210: USD 0.05 per piece above 1,000 pcs. Below 1,000 pcs we keep it on the standard PP compound.
  • HNBR pump O-ring on the pressurized pot: USD 0.07 per pot above 1,000 pcs. We keep it as a default if you tell us the destination is cold.
  • Spare parts kit: we can pack the pump assembly, spout and gasket as a separate SKU so your customer can service the pot instead of replacing it.

What the standards say, briefly

There is no single global standard for hand-held drip oilers. The standards that touch them: ISO 2859 for sampling by attributes when you inspect a finished batch (we test every container at AQL 1.5), ISO 14001 for the environmental side of our factory (our zinc-plating line is closed-loop), and in the European Union, the CE framework requires a declaration of conformity signed by the importer if the oiler is sold with a pressurized gas charge. Hand-pumped drip oilers like all four SKUs above do not trigger CE — they are inert. If your buyer is asking for "CE certification" on a hand pump, ask whether they have a gas propellant in mind; if they don't, what they need is the test report, not a CE mark. Do not pay a third-party lab to CE-certify a hand pump.

If you stock only one

The honest recommendation for a new buyer who has not carried this category: if you cover general auto repair shops, stock the YZDT2001 pressurized pot as the anchor SKU and add the SL-203 metal oil gun once you have a maintenance / industrial account to add. The SL-210 plastic can stays on the parts shelf as the impulse-add. The YZDT2021 heavy-duty only earns its shelf space once you have a heavy-machinery or quick-lube account; do not anchor on it.
