Few sourcing decisions cost distributors more lost sales than mismatched standards. HVAC tube-working tools — flaring tools, tube benders, and the blocks that fit them — are built to either inch or metric copper tubing. Stock the wrong one and the tool simply does not fit your market's tube. This guide explains the difference and gives procurement tips for global distributors.
The Core Difference
Copper refrigeration and plumbing tube is sized two ways:
Inch (imperial) sizes: 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", 3/4" (and larger). Dominant in the United States, Canada, much of the Middle East, and many import hubs that follow U.S. equipment specs.
Metric sizes: 6, 8, 10, 12, 16 mm. Dominant across China, Europe, Southeast Asia and most of the world that follows ISO tubing.
A flaring-tool clamp block or a tube-bender former is machined to one standard. An inch block will not seat a metric tube correctly, and forcing it produces a bad flare or a kinked bend.
Why It Hurts Distributors
Dead stock — a metric-market warehouse full of inch formers does not sell.
Returns — a technician who finds the block does not fit the tube blames the tool, not the standard.
Mixed-equipment regions — some markets run U.S.-spec refrigeration (inch) inside a metric-country; you may need both.

North America / Gulf (U.S.-spec): stock inch blocks (1/4"–3/4") across flaring and bending.
Europe / Asia / most of the world: stock metric (6–16 mm).
