What Is A Flaring Tool & How It Works for HVAC Refrigeration Systems

What Is A Flaring Tool?
A flaring tool forms a conical “flare” at the end of a tube. The flared end sits inside a mating flare fitting (commonly an SAE 45° seat) and is clamped by a flare nut. Because the seal is created by metal-to-metal surface contact — not by thread sealant — the quality of the flare determines whether the joint holds refrigerant pressure without leaking.

The 45° Flare Principle
Most air-conditioning and refrigeration work uses a 45° flare (the SAE standard). The tool works in two stages:
The tube is clamped in a sized block (or paired blocks) so the end stands proud by a precise amount.
A flaring cone or yoke is turned against the tube end, spreading it outward into a 45° cone.
A uniform flare distributes clamping force evenly around the seat. When the cone angle and surface finish are consistent, the joint resists cracking under torque and holds vacuum during system evacuation. An off-angle or torn flare, by contrast, is the most common cause of slow refrigerant leaks.
Ordinary vs Eccentric vs Ratchet Flaring Tools

How To Form A Correct Flare
A repeatable flare follows a short sequence:
Cut square — a tube cutter leaves a square end; avoid hacksaw nicks.
Deburr — remove internal and external burrs so the cone forms cleanly.
Clamp correctly — seat the tube in the matching block; let the correct length protrude.
Lubricate the cone — a light film reduces drag and tearing.
Feed evenly — turn the cone smoothly; do not force it.
Inspect — the flare should be bright, even and crack-free.
