Brake Line Flaring Tool Kit: B2B Buyer's Guide for Auto Repair Workshops
A buyer in Argentina sent us an RFQ last month asking for a "24-piece brake line repair kit with bubble flare" — and emailed us photos of three different tools from three different catalogs. The vocabulary on brake line flaring tools is not consistent across markets, and the wrong tool ends up in the wrong box. This page is what we tell a new buyer when they ask which of our brake flaring kits covers their channel. It is written from the production floor, not from a marketing checklist.
We manufacture six brake flaring and brake-line-repair kits under the TORCHMARK / Longrun Hardware brand: the 8-piece combination kit, the single heavy-duty flaring tool, the 34-piece automotive brake line flaring kit, the 36-piece professional kit with stainless tubing, the 36-piece with nickel-copper tubing only, and the 24-piece BLF-24 repair kit with bender, cutter, 25 ft tubing and 20 NPTF fittings. The "BLF-24" naming is what we use internally to keep the kits distinct; your buyer's RFQ may call it something else.
What is actually inside a 3/16" brake line flaring tool kit
Most B2B buyers order brake line flaring kits for one of three jobs: replacing corroded brake lines on a passenger vehicle, repairing damaged lines on a light commercial vehicle, or kitting out a fleet maintenance bay. All three jobs need the same six tool categories — but the number of pieces per category is where the kits diverge.
- Flaring tool body (1 pc). The cast steel yoke and the T-handle that drives the cone into the tube end. This is the part most buyers look at first. Weight is the rough proxy for build quality — under 1.2 kg is a sign the body is cast iron rather than forged steel, and cast iron yokes crack after two or three cold-warehouse drops.
- Flaring cones for single flare, double flare and bubble flare (1–4 pcs). Cones are wear parts; the more you ship per kit, the less the buyer panics when one wears out. Double flare is the standard for SAE brake line work. Bubble flare is what Japanese-spec and some European-spec brake systems use. Single flare is for low-pressure non-brake fuel and transmission lines. If a kit ships with only one cone, it is a single-purpose kit; if it ships with three or four, it can cover JIS-DOT-Euro cars.
- Tube cutter (1 pc). A ratchet-style copper-nickel-cutter is what we ship; cheap abrasive-wheel cutters leave burrs that flare unevenly and leak on the first hydraulic test.
- Tube bender (0–1 pc). A 3/16" / 1/4" lever-style bender. Bundled in kits that target the auto-repair-shop channel; not bundled in kits that target wholesale-bracket distribution. The bender is the difference between a kit that survives one repair and a kit that survives a real workshop's first quarter.
- Nickel-copper or stainless brake tubing (0–25 ft). Bundled in repair kits (51, 52, 54, 59), not in flaring-only kits (49, 50). 25 ft is enough for one full brake-line replacement on a passenger vehicle; fleets buy by the case because they go through 200+ feet per truck per year.
- Fittings (0–30 pcs). NPTF / PT / BSPT threaded brass fittings in 3/16" and 1/4". A repair kit without fittings is a kit the buyer has to drive to a second warehouse to finish — that is what gets the kit returned within 30 days.
The piece count on the box is the buyer's first filter; the part that ends up defining whether the kit works is what is inside each piece. A 24-piece kit with one cone and no fittings is not really a 24-piece kit for B2B purposes.
Single flare vs double flare vs bubble flare — which one the kit needs
This is the question that gets asked first in auto repair and fleet-maintenance RFQs, and it is the question where the wrong answer is the most expensive. The three flares are not interchangeable, and a kit with the wrong flare cone cannot be retrofitted in the field.
- Single flare (45°). Used for low-pressure fuel lines, transmission cooler lines, and older European cars. The cone tip is a 45° angle. If a buyer is restoring a 1980s European vehicle or working on non-brake hydraulic lines, single flare is fine. Modern brake systems should not use it.
- Double flare (45° × 2). The standard for US-spec and Australian-spec brake lines on passenger cars and light commercial vehicles since the 1970s. SAE J527 / SAE J513 reference this geometry. Almost every fleet in the Americas calls for double flare. A kit that does not have a double-flare cone is a non-starter for fleet buyers.
- Bubble flare (37°). Used on Japanese-spec vehicles (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Mazda) and on some European trailers with hydraulic brakes. The flare geometry looks like a small dome at the tube end, sealed by an inverted cone on the threaded fitting. A "Japanese brake line flaring tool kit" almost always means bubble flare, not double flare.
A pragmatic rule we use when an RFQ does not specify: if the buyer is in the Americas and the vehicle list is US/European, order double flare. If the buyer is in Asia-Pacific or the Middle East and the vehicle list is Japanese, order bubble flare. If the buyer is in Eastern Europe (especially Poland, Czech Republic, Romania), double-check — both German passenger cars (double flare) and Japanese light commercial vehicles (bubble flare) are common there.
Real numbers from a 20GP container loaded in July
Below is what one container of our brake flaring kits looks like going out to four buyers. Same production batch, same components, only the SKU mix differs. The weights and CBMs are measured at Ningbo container yard, not at the buyer's warehouse.

What the table does not show is what changes the moment a buyer orders a custom version. Two switches that move price tier the most: cone material (Cr-V hardened vs basic carbon steel — about USD 0.40 per kit), and packaging (steel tool case vs color box — about USD 0.85 per kit). Those two together can shift a 36-piece kit from one price bracket to the next, so get them specified before the RFQ, not after.
Which kit ends up where — channel-by-channel map
The honest shortlist of who buys each kit. Number in front is product ID, after the colon is the dominant first-time buyer profile.
- 51 (34-piece): Passenger-vehicle 4S dealerships and large independent repair shops. The 34-piece kit sits on the bay cart for two reasons — the steel case does not get crushed, and the double-flare cone plus bubble-flare cone covers both Japan-built and US-built fleets. Anchor SKU for fleet maintenance accounts.
- 52 (36-piece pro): Specialty shops that work on European and US classics where the brake line is mild-steel or stainless, not nickel-copper. The kit is the only one of ours that ships stainless steel brake tubing. Buyers are restoration shops, custom hot-rods, and one or two specialty truck upfitters.
- 59 / BLF-24 (24-piece): Online retail and LATAM/Eastern Europe wholesale. The piece count is "complete-enough" without being intimidating on a shelf photo. Most of the BLF-24 volume goes to Amazon FBA-style e-commerce buyers and Latin American distributors who price-shop the 24-piece category.
- 54 (36-piece economy): Buyers who want 36-piece box content but not the steel case or stainless tubing. It is the value SKU in the same shelf position as 52; if a buyer is asking for "the same 36-piece kit but cheaper", 54 is what they should get, not 52 with a discount they cannot have.
- 49 (8-piece): Buyers who already own a flaring tool and need everything around it — bender, cutter, the small fittings assortment. Strong in the EU and AU independent-hardware channel.
- 50 (single HD): Repeat-stock item for fleets and 4S dealers who already have a full kit and need a backup heavy-duty flaring tool that survives daily shop floor use. Buy by the case (12-pc inner box, 60-pc master). Not a starter kit.
The pattern we see when a buyer's mix crosses from mostly-DIY into mostly-shop: their volume shifts toward 51 + 52 (heavy kits with metal cases), and 54 / 59 (color-box kits) drop out of the reorder cycle. That shift usually takes 9–18 months from first PO.
Real failure modes we have shipped into, and the fix we made
The four problems that account for 80% of warranty returns across the brake flaring category. Each one is a real cost we paid at least once, not a theoretical risk.
1. Flaring cone concentricity out of spec → leak at first brake test. 3/16" is small enough that a 0.05 mm concentricity drift will not show in a pre-shipment leak test, but it will show in the customer's first workshop test on a caliper. We had a 2023 batch go out with a worn CNC spindle on the lathe; 4.5% of that batch failed on the buyer's first hydraulic test. The fix was a 100% concentricity check at a station we added after the spindle replacement — every kit, every cone, signed off with a torque-witness sticker. The fix costs USD 0.06 per kit. The cost of the original failure was the buyer's first container and the relationship. If you are evaluating a new supplier, ask for the cone-concentricity inspection record; if they do not have one, expect a leak rate higher than you want.
2. Nickel-copper tube wall-thickness drift (SAE J527). Nickel-copper brake tubing is made to a 0.89 mm ±0.05 mm wall tolerance. If a mill drifts, the tube still looks fine, but the flare bite is shallow and cracks under high-pressure test. We had a Chinese mill shipment in late 2024 with 0.13 mm wall drift at the top of the spool. We added a per-batch incoming wall-thickness check, and the tube must come with the mill's batch-trace sheet. If a buyer is sourcing tubing separately, ask for batch trace and don't accept untraced material.
3. Mixed NPTF / PT / BSPT threaded fittings in one bag. NPTF (ANSI B1.20.1, dryseal), PT (JIS B 0203, taper pipe), and BSPT (BS EN 10226, British Standard taper pipe) look almost identical to the eye but thread differently. We had a 2022 mixed-fit incident where a Brazilian customer's workshop tried to thread a PT fitting into an NPTF port and snapped the male fitting inside the caliper. The fix was a per-destination-market fittings kitting policy: every fittings bag has a single thread standard labeled on the bag and on the inner carton. If you are a buyer who gets a kit and cannot tell the thread type, do not use the fittings — order replacements specified to your market's standard before installing.
4. Tube bender pinch marks (3/16" + thick-wall). Cheap lever benders pinch the tube wall at the bend, leaving a thin spot that fatigues after about 6 months on a brake line. We changed the bender-form geometry on the 51 and 59 kits in 2024 to a longer-form lever that distributes the bend over a larger contact area. The new form costs us USD 0.18 per bender extra. Old-style benders still exist in some competitor kits; if your supplier is offering prices noticeably below ours, this is one place to look for the cut.
OEM and private-label pricing — what each part actually costs
Real numbers, not list, on the parts of an OEM program that are not obvious from a price list. These are the extras that turn into invoice line items the first time a buyer orders, not the time the RFQ goes out.
- Custom retail color box artwork (buyer-supplied AI / EPS / CDR): Setup USD 280–420 per design, one color. Refunded across the first 5,000-piece order. Per-piece box-up cost: USD 0.18 vs standard catalog box.
- Custom steel tool case (laser-cut foam insert + buyer logo on lid): Tooling USD 1,400–2,000 per kit size, plus per-piece USD 0.85 over a standard color box. Below 1,000 pieces per case size, ask us to use an existing buyer-supplied case — most of our repeat OEM buyers repurpose a case from their previous supplier for the first run while the custom case is being tooled.
- Cone-side laser engraving or silk-screen logo: Laser USD 0.06 per piece, 500-piece minimum. Silk-screen USD 0.04 per piece, 1,000-piece minimum. Most B2B buyers prefer the engraving on the cone rather than the box, because the cone is the part the technician touches every day.
- Custom fittings bag — single thread standard, custom bag print: Bag artwork USD 80–120 per color, setup one-time. Per-bag upcharge USD 0.04 above 1,000 pieces. This is the only way to guarantee no mixed-thread incidents on the buyer's shop floor.
- BV / SGS / TÜV third-party pre-shipment inspection: Fee is 0.3%–0.5% of the FOB value, buyer pays. Lead time 3–5 working days at our factory. Most B2B buyers requesting this for first orders only.
- Tool case PE-foam insert custom cut: USD 0.42 per piece above 500 pieces. Below 500 pieces we use the standard catalog foam; it works but the parts rattle inside the case during shipping, and that is where some of the cosmetic-defect complaints come from.

Standards cheat sheet — which standard applies to which part
The brake flaring category touches several distinct standards. Each one refers to a different article, and confusing them is a frequent buyer question.
- SAE J527 — covers nickel-copper and steel brake tubing geometry and pressure rating. This is the standard the tube itself must meet.
- SAE J512 — covers automotive tube fittings (the threaded part the flare mates with). NPTF is one of several thread types referenced.
- SAE J513 — covers refrigeration and air-conditioning tubing and fittings, sometimes cross-referenced by brake-line buyers who also do refrigerant work in the same workshop.
- ANSI B1.20.1 (NPTF dryseal) — the North American / Australian thread standard for tapered pipe threads used in 90% of our brake-line fittings.
- JIS B 0203 (PT) — the Japanese Industrial Standard for tapered pipe threads. If the buyer's market is Japan, the fittings must be PT, not NPTF.
- BS EN 10226 / ISO 7-1 (BSPT) — British Standard Pipe Taper. Used in the UK, Singapore, Malaysia, India.
- ISO 2859 — sampling by attributes. We inspect every container at AQL 1.5 cosmetic / AQL 0.65 functional. This is our factory sampling standard, not a product standard; if a buyer asks for "ISO 2859 testing", what they get is the sampling report.
The most common standard confusion we see: a buyer asks "is this DOT-compliant?" DOT FMVSS is the U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard for the brake line system as installed on a vehicle. The flaring tool that produced the flare is not the regulated article. We test our flares to SAE J527 cone geometry; what the buyer certifies is the brake line assembly after installation, not the tool. If a buyer's RFQ asks for "DOT-certified brake flaring tool", clarify whether they want conformance of the flare geometry to SAE J527 (we ship that test report) or conformance of the assembled brake line on a specific vehicle platform (the vehicle OEM's job).
What we ship with the order — paperwork for first-time and repeat buyers
The standard export paperwork for a brake flaring kit PO, in the order the buyer's customs broker will ask for them:
- Commercial invoice. Three stamped-and-signed originals.
- Packing list. Carton numbers, SKU breakdown, net + gross weight, CBM.
- Certificate of Origin. Issued by Ningbo Chamber of Commerce, Form A (GSP for developing-country buyers), Form E (China-ASEAN), or Form F (China-Chile), depending on destination.
- Factory test report. References SAE J527 tubing and ANSI B1.20.1 thread geometry. Issued within 30 days of shipment.
- Declaration of Conformity. Branded and signed by TORCHMARK as manufacturer. We sign only for components we make; the buyer signs as importer of record for any market-specific declarations (CE in the EU, CPSIA in the US, and so on).
- Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS / SDS). Required only if the kit ships pre-lubricated or with a cutting-oil thread compound. Most of our brake flaring kits do not require this; the nickel-copper tubing and the steel case are inert.
If a buyer's customs broker asks for a certificate we have not listed here, send us the broker's request and we will respond within one business day. The most common ones we are asked for that are not on the list above: REACH SVHC declaration (we maintain the file and ship on request), California Prop 65 statement (the steel components pass the relevant thresholds; we sign the statement on request), and CISPR-style electrical EMC reports (the flaring tool has no electrical components, so these are not applicable — write that on the buyer's spec sheet to save the broker a useless chase).
If the buyer stocks only one kit from our line
For a new distributor who has not carried this category before, our honest anchor recommendation is the BLF-24 (24-piece) as the first SKU. It is the kit that covers most of the everyday 3/16" brake line repair job without leaving the buyer holding a half-empty case. Once the buyer has a maintenance or 4S dealership account, the second SKU is the 34-piece kit in a steel case; that one is what fleet and dealership bay carts end up on, and the metal case is what causes the customer to reorder rather than treat the tool as disposable.
Do not anchor on the single heavy-duty flaring tool as a starter — it is a backup tool for a buyer who already has a kit, not a kit by itself. And do not anchor on the 36-piece pro stainless kit if the buyer's market does not have a stainless-tube repair habit; the stainless tubing adds 25% to the per-piece weight and the per-piece price, and a buyer who cannot move it ends up discounting.
Common B2B questions we get about brake line flaring kits
The questions below come up in the first three emails of almost every new wholesale or distributor account. They are reproduced here in the form they are asked in, with the honest answers.
What is the difference between SAE and DIN brake line flaring tools, and does the BLF-24 cover both? SAE is the imperial system used in the US, Canada, Australia, most of South America, Japan (with Japanese-spec bubble flare geometry). DIN is the metric system used in continental Europe. The BLF-24 covers SAE 3/16" and 1/4" nickel-copper with NPTF threaded fittings, plus the bubble flare for JIS-spec Japanese vehicles. For DIN-spec European work, you need a different kit — we have one but it is not in the BLF-24; ask us about the "EBF" line for European brake line flaring.
Do I need a double flare or a single flare for 3/16" brake line? Double flare. Any kit you order for a US, Australia, or Latin American auto repair shop must include a double-flare cone. Single flare is for non-brake hydraulic lines (older fuel return lines, transmission cooler lines) and should not be used on a brake system.
What brake line sizes does the BLF-24 cover? The kit ships with cones for 3/16" (4.76 mm) and 1/4" (6.35 mm) tubes. The included tube cutter and bender are sized for the same range. We have a sister kit (BLF-12, 12-piece) that covers 5/16" and 3/8" for light-truck brake lines; it is not on the public site yet — ask us.
What is the MOQ for a private-label brake line flaring kit? 500 pieces per SKU for stock artwork, or 1,000 pieces for fully custom artwork (retail box, steel case, fittings bag). For first-time OEM buyers we sometimes run 300-piece trial orders against a confirmed second-order schedule; that is by arrangement, not as a default.
Can you ship brake line flaring kits with custom retail packaging and language inserts? Yes. We routinely ship 4-language printed inserts (English / Spanish / Portuguese / French for LATAM and West Africa, English / Arabic for the Middle East, English / Russian for Eastern Europe). Lead time on a custom insert adds 10 working days to the production schedule. The retail box itself adds the artwork setup fee listed above.
How long does it take to ship a 5,000-piece order of brake flaring kits? Stock SKUs ship in 15 working days from PO. Custom OEM SKUs ship in 30–40 working days from artwork approval. Container loading and ETD add another 7–10 working days depending on the destination. Total lead time for a first-time OEM buyer planning ahead: 45 working days from sample approval.
