PPR Pipe Fusion Welding: A Step-by-Step Guide to Leak-Free Joints
PPR (polypropylene random copolymer) pipe is the default choice for hot and cold potable-water and low-temperature heating systems. Its biggest advantage is the joint: fusion welding melts the pipe and fitting into one homogeneous piece, so there is no rubber seal to age or leak. Done right, the joint is as strong as the pipe itself. This guide walks through the process and the timing that makes it reliable.

1. What You Need
A clean fusion weld starts with the right kit: a PPR welding machine (the heating plate with male/female sockets), a dedicated PPR pipe cutter, a chamfering / deburring tool, a marker, and a clean cloth. Use the cutter made for PPR — a saw leaves a rough, angled face that ruins the seal.
2. Step 1 — Cut Square And Deburr
Cut the pipe square using the PPR cutter, then chamfer the outside edge and remove the internal burr. Wipe both the pipe end and the fitting socket clean. A square face and a clean bore are prerequisites for full contact during fusion.
3. Step 2 — Mark The Insertion Depth
Mark the insertion depth on the pipe from the depth gauge of the fitting. Under-insertion leaves a thin, weak weld; over-insertion can neck down the bore. The mark keeps every joint consistent across a job.
4. Step 3 — Heat The Pipe And Fitting
Bring the welding machine to working temperature (around 260 ± 5 °C) and let it stabilise. Push the pipe onto the male heater and the fitting onto the female heater at the same time — no twisting — until the depth mark is reached. Follow the DVS 2207 heating times for the diameter:

A visible, even melt bead at both insertions is the sign of correct heating. If the bead is thin or absent, the parts were under-heated; if the material smokes or chars, it was over-heated.
5. Step 4 — Join And Hold
Pull both parts off the heater and push them together in one straight, twist-free motion to the depth mark. Hold the joint still for the join-hold time above. Do not rotate or adjust — the melt layer is thin and any movement creates a weak, misaligned weld.
6. Step 5 — Cool Undisturbed
Leave the joint to cool under no load for the time in the table before handling or pressurising. Cooling too early, or hanging pipe weight on a fresh joint, is a common cause of later leaks.
7. Common Defects To Avoid
The four failures to watch: a cold joint (under-heated, no bead), an over-heated / charred joint, misalignment from twisting while joining, and insufficient insertion past the depth mark. All four come from rushing the heat-and-hold window or a dirty, angled cut.
8. Standards And Compliance
Reliable PPR systems are built to ISO 15874 (polypropylene pipes for hot and cold water) and welded per the DVS 2207 guidance (fusion of thermoplastic pipes). Welding machines and fittings should meet the conformity requirements of the destination market (for example CE marking for the EU).
