What Is a Rivet Nut Gun

A rivet nut gun (also called a nut-sert or insert tool) installs a threaded insert — a rivet nut — into thin or soft sheet material where you cannot weld a nut or reach the back side. The result is a strong, reusable threaded anchor in sheet metal, tubing, or composite panels.

What a rivet nut is

A rivet nut is a tubular insert with internal threads. Once set, it behaves like a welded nut but installs from one side only — ideal for enclosed or thin sections.

How the gun works

The gun pulls a mandrel that collapses the rivet nut's body against the back of the hole, clamping the sheet. Release the mandrel and you have a flush, load-bearing thread.

Where rivet nuts are used

Sheet-metal fabrication, automotive and trailer bodies, enclosures, HVAC panels, and anywhere a blind (one-sided) threaded fastener is needed. See our hand rivet nut tools.

Manual vs powered

Hand ratchet guns suit low volume; pneumatic and battery tools speed up production runs. Choose by cycle count and ergonomics.

Compliance & Standards References
Rivet nuts are specified to ISO 16582; blind rivets to ISO 15977 and DIN 7338; rivets to DIN 7339; fastener mechanical properties to ISO 898. Our tools are produced under an ISO 9001 quality system. For the full standards index, see our HVAC & Plumbing Tool Standards Quick-Reference.
