How to Choose a PPR Fusion Welder

A PPR fusion welder (socket fusion machine) is the tool that makes PPR plumbing possible: it heats the pipe and fitting until they fuse into a single, leak-free joint. Buying the wrong one means weak joints or a tool that won't cover your pipe sizes. This guide covers the types, the specs that matter, and what to check before you buy.

How socket fusion works

Both the pipe end and the fitting socket are heated on a temperature-controlled element (typically ~260 °C for PPR), then pressed together and held until cool. The melted layers fuse molecularly — no solvent, no threads. Correct temperature and dwell time are everything; too cold and the joint won't bond, too hot and the pipe collapses.

Types of PPR welder

  • Socket fusion (most common): heater with male/female dies for 20–63 mm pipe. Covers virtually all domestic PPR work.
  • Butt fusion: for large diameters (≥63 mm); heats two pipe ends face-to-face.
  • Infrared / electrofusion: specialized; less common in field plumbing.
