PPR vs PVC: Which Pipe for Hot and Cold Water?

"PPR or PVC?" is one of the most common plumbing spec questions — and one of the most confused. Both are plastic, both are white-ish, but they are built for different jobs. The short answer: PPR (PP-R) for hot and cold potable water; PVC-U for cold water, drainage and irrigation — not hot water. This guide explains why, with a side-by-side comparison.

What PPR (PP-R) is

Polypropylene Random Copolymer pipe is a thermoplastic joined by heat fusion, which creates a joint as strong as the pipe itself. It is rated for both hot and cold potable water (typically up to ~70 °C continuous, ~95 °C short term) and is the default choice for domestic hot-water distribution in most of Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

What PVC-U is

Unplasticized (rigid) PVC is joined with solvent cement. It handles cold potable water and DWV (drain-waste-vent) well, but it softens and loses pressure rating as temperature rises — so it is not approved for hot-water supply lines. It is also the standard for irrigation and conduit.

Which should you choose?

  • Hot-water supply, anywhere in the building: PPR. See our PPR fusion welders and the PPR welding step-by-step guide.
  • Cold water, drainage, irrigation, conduit: PVC-U, cut with a PVC pipe cutter.
  • Mixing them: never solvent-weld PPR, and never run hot water through PVC-U. Transition fittings exist but the materials are not interchangeable.
Compliance & Standards References
PPR piping for hot and cold potable water is specified to ISO 15874 (and ISO 15875 for cross-linked PE-X systems). Rigid PVC compounds and fittings are covered by ASTM D1784 (compound) and ASTM D2466 / D2467 (fittings). Fusion jointing practice follows DVS 2207. Always specify the standard marked on the product.
