Both ratchet and scissor PVC cutters produce a cleaner cut than a saw, but they are built for different pipe sizes and different hands. Pick wrong and you will fight the tool all day. This comparison breaks down how each works, where it wins, and how to choose for your typical job.
How a scissor cutter works
A scissor (or "snip") cutter uses a single squeeze of the handles to drive a curved blade through the pipe. The blade and anvil close like scissors, so the cut is made in one smooth motion. It is light, fast, and ideal for small diameters.
- Best for: 16–40 mm (½–1½ in) pipe, repetitive small cuts, one-hand work in tight spaces.
- Limit: above ~50 mm the wall is too thick for one squeeze; you stall or crack the pipe.
How a ratchet cutter works
A ratchet cutter uses compound leverage: you pump the handle through several "clicks," and each stroke advances the blade a little deeper. The mechanical advantage lets you cut large, thick-wall pipe with modest hand force.
- Best for: 40–110 mm (1½–4 in) Schedule 40/80 PVC, DWV, and pressure pipe.
- Limit: heavier, needs a full hand swing, slower per cut on small pipe.

Which one should you choose?
- Residential / irrigation / conduit: a scissor cutter covers almost everything under 1½ in.
- Commercial DWV or thick-wall pressure lines: a ratchet cutter is the right tool once pipe exceeds 1½ in.

Blade care and safety
Replace the blade when cuts start to crush rather than slice, and keep the pivot clean. Never cut PVC under tension, and always support the off-cut so it does not snap the pipe wall (see our guide on cutting PVC straight without cracks).
