A few weeks ago a buyer in Mexico asked for a quote on what he called a "drain auger" — turned out he wanted a pistol-grip drum unit, not the hand-crank cable we ended up sending. He didn't push back, but the conversation is typical: half of the drain-auger RFQs we get describe the same tool with three or four different words. So before we talk about the JQ-002 line and the new JQ-003, here is the vocabulary we use at the factory, with the words our buyers actually use in their markets.

If you have been here before, you already know the JQ-002A/B (drum auger) and the JQ-002E (drum auger with trigger feed). The new piece in our range is the JQ-003 manual rotary hand-crank, and the question we keep getting is whether it replaces the drum auger or sits next to it. The short answer is "next to it" — the rest of this page is the long answer, with the cable, drum and packaging details we wish every RFQ told us upfront.

What the two actually are

The drum auger is a 6 mm cable coiled inside a plastic drum, fed by rotating the drum or squeezing a trigger on the pistol grip. The hand-crank auger is a free cable with a separate handle that the user rotates. That is the whole engineering difference — everything else (price, weight, channel, end user) follows from it.

If you are stocking for a US home-center chain you already know the drum auger: it is the SKU that lives on a pegboard next to the plungers. The drum sells it. The end user trusts a drum because that is what they have seen on TV and at Home Depot since the 1980s. The JQ-002E keeps the drum and adds a two-finger trigger and a TPR overmold grip; the JQ-002E-G adds a pair of nitrile work gloves and lands on a retail shelf as a value bundle.

The hand-crank unit (JQ-003) is a different shape on the shelf — a flat box with a coil of cable and a steel crank with red-and-black grips. It looks more like a fishing reel than a drain tool. The end user is a property manager, an RV owner, a janitor or a service-van operator — somebody who needs a tool they can carry one-handed and does not need a spare-cable program.

Numbers we are willing to put in writing

From our last 20GP container shipped in July, the comparable numbers for a 5 m unit:

One warning before you spec a 4 mm or 8 mm cable: we have run both, and 4 mm kinks the first time a homeowner hits a P-trap; 8 mm will not navigate a 1.5" trap at all. 6 mm is the cable we default to. 8 mm exists for the 2" trade-plumber segment only — if your customer is a homeowner, do not stock it.

Where the JQ-003 fits, channel by channel

The honest channel map we use when a buyer asks "should I add this to my range":

• Big-box home center (Home Depot, Lowe's, B&Q, Leroy Merlin, Sodimac). Drum auger only. The drum is what the customer expects. The hand-crank unit looks weird on that pegboard and ends up on clearance.
• Independent hardware and plumbing supply. Drum auger is the workhorse. JQ-003 is the second SKU behind it, sold to maintenance accounts and RV / marine walk-ins.
• Dollar store / discount channel. JQ-003 first, drum auger second if at all. Ship weight and unit cost matter more than the drum.
• Online marketplace (Amazon, Mercado Libre, eBay). Both work. The drum auger has more reviews; the JQ-003 has a higher add-to-cart rate because the pictures look more "pro".
• Rental, property management, hospitality. JQ-003 is the default. They buy by the case and want the lighter ship weight.
• RV, marine, mobile service. JQ-003 is the only one that makes sense — the cable stores flat in a compartment and there is no drum to crack.

If you are a distributor trying to cover more than one of these channels, the JQ-002E and the JQ-003 sit on different shelves and do not cannibalize each other. We have a Latin American buyer who replaced half of his JQ-002A/B reorders with JQ-003 once his property-management accounts discovered the lighter unit; the JQ-002A/B volume dropped to the home-center accounts only. That is the pattern we usually see.

What we get wrong, and what we have learned

Three things that hurt us in the past 18 months on this category, in case it saves you the same mistake:

1. The drum lock is the part that fails first. On the JQ-002A/B we originally used a hex-bolt drum lock. It worked, but a hex key is not something a homeowner has in a drawer at 10 pm on a Saturday. We changed to a quick-release thumbscrew in 2024, and the return rate on the JQ-002E dropped by about a third. If you are private-labeling a drum auger, ask the factory specifically about the drum lock — not the cable, not the trigger, the lock.

2. The cable seal at the drum inlet is the part that rusts first. A drum auger that goes into a flooded kitchen sink and then sits in a garage for two weeks will rust from the inside if the felt / rubber wiper is missing. We had a Brazilian buyer in 2024 whose first 1,000 units all rusted through within six months. We reworked the wiper to a denser felt, switched the cable to a thicker zinc coating, and the problem went away. If you are running a humid market (Florida, the Gulf, Southeast Asia, coastal Brazil), specify the wiper on the spec sheet — do not assume it is standard.

3. "PVC cable" is not one thing. The JQ-003 cable is PVC-coated. There are two PVC densities on the market: a flexible 60 Shore A that bends easily at room temperature and a stiffer 80 Shore A that holds its shape. We ship 70 Shore A. If a factory quotes you a JQ-003 at a noticeably lower price, it is probably 80 Shore A — the cable will hold the coil shape but fight you when you try to feed it down a P-trap. Ask.

OEM, private label and the parts that actually cost money

If you are scaling the JQ-003 or the JQ-002 line as a private-label program, here is what we charge for the parts that are not obvious from a price list:

• Mold cost for a custom drum housing color: about USD 1,800–2,400, refundable on the first 30,000 pieces. Standard colors (black, blue, red) are free. Anything Pantone-matched costs the mold plus a 5% color-match fee per batch.
• Logo on the drum housing (silk-screen): free for orders above 1,000 pcs per color. Pad print below 1,000 pcs. Heat-transfer for the retail carton: USD 0.04 per box at 5,000 pcs.
• Custom retail box artwork (AI / EPS supplied by you): free. We charge for the print plate, which is USD 60–90 per color, refunded across the first run.
• Spare cable as a separate SKU: we can pack cables in bundles of 10 with your barcode; this is the consumable that keeps the customer coming back.
• Bundle with work gloves (JQ-002E-G style): about USD 0.42 per pair in bulk nitrile-coated cotton. We buy the gloves in the same factory district so the lead time does not slip.

What the standards say, briefly

There is no single global standard for hand-held drain augers. The standards that touch them in different markets: ISO for material and mechanical test methods (we test to ISO 17075 for cable hardness), ASTM International for general hand-tool safety (the JQ-002 and JQ-003 both meet ASTM F2592 for hand tool grip strength), and in North America, the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors Association (PHCC) publishes installation codes that drive what the trade plumber expects a drain tool to do. For the EU, the CE marking framework requires a declaration of conformity signed by the importer; in the US, the CPSC administers general product-safety rules. We can send you the test reports on request, but ask your importer first which declarations they need — every market wants slightly different paperwork, and it is cheaper to do it once correctly than to redo it after a customs hold.

If you only stock one, stock the JQ-002E

The honest recommendation for a new buyer who has not carried our line before: stock the JQ-002E as your anchor SKU and add the JQ-003 once you have a maintenance / rental / RV account. The JQ-002A/B is the value-tier drum auger and we still ship a lot of it, but the trigger-feed version is what retail buyers keep reordering in 2026.
